GEO vs SEO: what changes and what doesn't.

SEO wins a ranked link on a results page. GEO wins a mention inside the answer an AI tool writes itself. The two share their foundations, and most businesses need both, but they reward different things and they're measured differently.
Where they overlap
Both need a site that can be crawled and read, loads quickly, labels its content with structured data and answers real questions. If your SEO foundations are sound, you're most of the way to being readable by AI tools. If they aren't, GEO won't save you.
Where they differ
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What you win | A ranked link | A mention inside an answer |
| What's rewarded | Relevance and authority | Specific, verifiable facts |
| Key content | Pages targeting searches | Pages answering buyer questions, comparisons |
| Outside signals | Links to your site | Consistent mentions and facts across other sites |
| How it's measured | Rankings and clicks | Who gets named for a fixed set of questions |
| JavaScript sites | Google renders them, slowly | Most AI crawlers get a blank page |
Facts beat persuasion
An AI answer is a summary, and summaries are built from specifics. A page that says "from £299, month to month, 14 days' notice" gets quoted. A page that says "flexible, affordable packages" gives the AI nothing to say. That's the single biggest shift for most businesses: publish the numbers you've been keeping for the sales call.
Rank isn't the same as being named
You can rank fifth on Google for a search and be the business ChatGPT names first, because the answer is assembled from several sources and weighted towards the clearest facts. The reverse happens too. That's why GEO is measured by asking the questions and recording who gets named, not by checking positions.
Which do you need?
If you already get steady traffic from Google, keep the SEO and add the GEO layer: facts, answer pages, comparisons. If you're new, or you sell something people research before buying, GEO can work faster than SEO. COMMON QUESTIONS
No. Google search still sends most businesses most of their visitors, and the two share the same foundations. GEO is an extra layer for the answers AI tools give.
It helps, because crawlable, well-structured pages are the starting point for both. But AI answers also reward published facts, comparisons and corroboration from other sites, which SEO work often leaves out.
GEO can be. ChatGPT search reads the live web, so a readable new site can be named within days. Sable Management was named first by ChatGPT four days after launch.
